I change oil every 5K miles regardless. Full synthetic oil and quality filter is cheap insurance and I do it myself so I know it's done correctly. Last thing I want to worry about is my motor seized, or the turbos coking up because I was too cheap or lazy to change oil because the dash said I still had 5K miles to go.

I just did the 1st oil change on my new to me truck that said I had 3700 miles left. It was some of the nastiest black oil I've ever seen and super thin like water, possibly the wrong grade oil. I'll probably change it again in 2K miles or less to help flush all that nasty oil out.

Each to their own. Glad to hear you've had good luck.

To this debate on the Rs and the OLM…

I posted on some FB R forums a few weeks back when this happened but….

Out of the blue my oil life went from 53% remaining to “change oil/ 0%” after a fuel fill up and it being driven home, started once in/ out of charge to move something / then sit till I started again say 3-4 days after the fuel
Fill up ( 5 miles max since).

And the Hx of oil changes since new:
1st change at 1600ish ( 50ish %) remaining I think

2nd at 5000 miles (3400 miles use 5% left)

Third ( that most recent oil change) was at 9400 miles, so 4400 miles of use at 0% remaining, done mid Nov 2024.

So now late March, call it four months of use, 12,080 odm / 2600 miles since last oil change. it’s a mix of highway / city driving in my commute when I use it, occasional full throttle romps but wouldn’t say it’s beat on or ran “ hard” by any means.

So I’m confused how it lost half it life “instantly” or if some other anomaly happened…

And just to pre answer questions,
I did all changes myself , I’m sure I reset the oil life each time etc. very particular about it. And I know track the trip screen info each fuel up
Along with the oil life remaining via phone pics, part of my maintenance OCD lol.
It doesn’t sit and idle for long periods of time.

So I rest it and we did an roadtrip since 500+ miles.

Was down to 94% at 380 miles /12,460odm

Then to 87% another 325 miles / 12,780 odm

Ford must want us changing the Oil in 3-5 K on these engines…

But i can’t make sense of how it plummeted from the 53% to zero like that????

Food for thought ?
