Mostly, I just had to comment on this post especially for the o.p.


I've seen a lit match be put out in a cup of diesel. But diesel has more power per unit than gasoline especially with far less refining
Diesel has a higher flash point. It doesn't vaporize as easy. Which is interpreted as a higher octane.

Gasoline will actually put out a match also. It is the vapors that burn (which is why atomization is so important).

And yes, diesel is denser than gasoline. So gallon for gallon diesel contains more energy. Hence why diesel engines get better MPG work for work.
