GEN 2 My only complaint after 1000 miles - Mushy brakes on new 2019 Raptor

I agree with you changing the lines out to stainless steel would probably help with the mushy feel
Personally I was going to try different brake pads that may have more initial bite.
As I tend to feel brake pressure needed to stop truck is high

Pads and bedding for better initial bite
Stainless lines and bedding for a firmer feel.

My ‘17 Raptor would squirm upon hard braking.

My ‘19 feels better, not mushy at all.

But it’s more tires I think and I just realize I’m not driving my 911 and keep my distance.

Ford Performance has plenty of experience making "crisp" brakes and easily could have done that if that is what was best for offroad use.

In offroad applications, "mushy" provides greater modulation and control in low grip situations where a driver is limited to 10 or 20% of the braking force seen on pavement.

The Raptor is an offroad focused design and is why it has brakes setup for offroad use.


I agree here. The brakes just have a long pedal travel, and that is different to get used to. I have no doubt if I "stand on" the brake pedal it will get into the anti locks no problem.

It took me 3-4 months to get used to that.

I can't wait to do my Raptor Assault in early may so I can learn what this truck can really do.

Hello subterfuge, did you happen to be at the raptor assault on March 11th?

Also I agree that's what the Ford performance folks said about the breaks. Also mentioned there was more braking force in Baja mode compared to normal. Could be something to play with. I don't remember about sport but sport mode might also have a stronger brake force I haven't tried comparing since I'm always in sport mode lol but now I may.

No. Not that week.

Nah... Suspension is fine. In fact, the ride is incredible for a truck, it rides more like a luxury sedan that can somehow easily eat up potholes without making you spill your coffee.

Just seems odd that the ride would be so incredible but the brakes would be so mushy. Suspect it's what some are saying that maybe the brakes are set up like that on purpose.

Question is, since my truck will be a mall crawler 99% of the time, I was hoping their might be a simple way to change the brakes more like what you get on a regular F150.

Or it may as one person said, be the big tires. My 2011 FX4 did not have tires on it like the Raptor. If this is what it is then it makes me think the brakes need upgrading.

Why is that the least bit surprising? Firstoff part of the ride is the humongous sidewalled squishy 35" BFG's we got from the factory - but other part is the long travel progressive rate offroad shocks, if you put "tighter" suspension on a vehicle it typically improves braking performance, significantly in some cases - which is why the further up the "extreme sport" scale you go on cars the "harsher" the ride is. If you took a buick w/ air ride & did a bunch of stops from 60 then swapped out for some bilstein sport shocks & changed nothing else the braking feel/distance would improve a good deal.

I agree though - the way Ford engineers have been able to find a "sweet spot" of compromises between offroad/onroad behavior + power etc. is very impressive.

Even w/ a BBK - which does interest me a little for the front - there's still no getting around the "soft" suspension & near 100 lb per corner all terrain tires (that were never meant for panic braking on twisty roads btw) or the shear weight of the truck in general lol
