I think it might have been in jest but these requirements are needed and not meant to be exclusionary. While these trucks can handle the terrain fine, it's the constant beating on the truck at higher speeds over hundreds of miles really takes its toll on the trucks and eventually something will brake. You just don't know when.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Death Valley run and I look at it as my obligation to make sure I'm prepared and mitigate the risk I'll be the reason the group has to spend all day trying to get my truck out of the middle of nowhere. They were doing me a favor by leading me through remote terrain that I know nothing about so the least I can do is make sure I'm prepared. And sure enough I my steering pump line blew. Luckily I had fluid and was able to get up and running. These guys were awesome as well. They quickly helped get my line hooked back up and the fluid filled. I took a lot of confort in knowing there were a couple former mechanics and the group really knew what they were doing. The way I look at it is the necessities are the price of admission since they don't charge anyone and are looking to have fun.

The other thing people don't realiz is how long 450 off road miles is. Day 1 of the Tahoe run took us nearly 6-7 hours and that was only 110 offroad miles.

Coming from someone who doesn't have the required items they listed. I think they are a great idea if you're doing this type of run. Even just doing a smaller run I put together last year here in phoenix with a 50 mile loop they would be good things to have. We had VHF radios which helped a ton. Having the route on a GPS is also huge. Otherwise people tend to miss turns and get lost.

This stuff isn't meant to be exclusive...it's meant to make sure you are included and if something was to happen, that you don't get left behind.

I'm always amazed at the number of folks that show up without even a simple set of tools, let alone the minimum recommended items.

Tools saved my ass this weekend. I will always bring a full set. I would have been stranded 6 hours from home if I hadn't had them.
