My guess would be that oil on the filter gasket causes too much variation in the torque procedure. I've never torqued an oil filter personally, I think the spec is there just for reference.

Oddly enough, the only vehicles I've ever seen that the gasket sticks to the filter boss is Ford. Maybe because the dry gasket install? I always wipe a very slight bit of oil on the gasket. It makes it much easier to hand-tighten such that it doesn't leak. In my ancient past as a youngster working at "service" station (not a self-serve convenience store, but a REAL service outlet) , I've seen the filter gasket roll up (chevy mostly, but a few Ford) when you tighten it down. In that ancient past, the rule was to lube the gasket on ALL vehicles so it wouldn't roll up...

Yes, I'm probably as old (or older) than @Oldfart! Hell, "Ethyl" (as in tetraethyl lead) aka "Premium" gasoline was only 0.25 per gallon. Price wars among local stations would sometimes bring it down into the low teens.

Filter cap is a very tight fit - I thought the same but it will fit with a little tap.

I've got a dealer whose maint. dept. I trust, been using them for years. I get enough of oil changes at work so I don't really care to do my own. I did an oil change on a Cat C280-8 engine the other day to the tune of 1000 quarts (250 gal) of MobilGard ADL 40. Thank God for electric driven gear pumps to get all that oil in and out. No spin-on filters, all soak-backs.

Just let Les Schwab change my oil this week. Today about 50 miles from anything and 30 miles down a dirt road check engine light comes on, get out and check the under the hood. Those guys left the oil cap off (I know I should check these things). While engine is sprayed with oil, oil level seems to be good still, check at operating temp, and after 12 hour cool down on level ground. Check engine light won’t turn off, need to see the dealer? Or anything else I might be missing. Don’t have a ******** (LOL) or is check myself
