Just spent some time building and installing my winch.
Got my Mig welder up and running and custom built my own winch mount. Didn't feel like spending $300 to $500 on something I could build for $120.
I had originally purchased a Harbor Freight winch for $350 and wanted to upgrade the cable to a synthetic rope which would have cost me an extra $250.
Ended up returning the winch to harbor freight and purchased a Smittybilt X2O Comp Series, 10,000 lb. Amphibious Winch for only $600 and lifetime warranty.

Awesome. I'm glad someone decided to make one at home! I've been thinking about the idea for months but haven't gotten around to pulling out the tape measure yet.

Any chance you have some drawings or a parts/cut list to save me some time?

I'll try to work something up. I'd probably change some things if I were to do it again to make it easier on me.
But it works.

Ironman, looks great. Still waiting to take delivery but a winch is high on the mod list. Since I don't have I'm trying to understand how easy it is t remove and replace that lower grill mesh. Does it pop on and off? Did you mod i somehow?

That would be sweet! Like I said, I've been planning on phabbing it up for a while but hadn't put much thought into materials yet. Mostly just been checking out pictures from the different people.

I like yours, looks great!

Nicely done. I have a MIG welder on the christmas list. Seems like a good trade to teach myself in 2013 after seeing how useful the skill is in the desert and garage.

Working on a jet horizontal band saw I saw on craigslist near me for a great deal. That and a decent grinder and I should be set for basic stuff (besides safety gear).
