I'm trying to get some ideas for in car GPS options. At last years 500 we just used our iphones with the Gaia app. The app allows you to create and download maps straight to your phone and save them so you can use your phone as a GPS. The app worked great even without cell service, but it took some time to understand how to load maps onto the phone.

What are you using for GPS? Lowrance? ipad with a GPS app? What GPS app do you recommend for an ipad?

I'm using a Lowrance 5m with the Outlaw GPS Mount. It works great and the mount makes it perfect. You can download maps from Google Earth, or where ever, with a little conversion. I think the biggest plus is that is Lowrance is the preference for MANY off-roaders, including Raptor Expeditions. So when you are going out with most other people, it is quick and easy to get maps from one to the other, which is critical if you aren't sharing maps well ahead of time to convert and get it setup.

This is how I feel as well. Sold my Lowrance and use Ipad. Will purchase another Lowrance when I get to run with R.E. Until then the Ipad is easier and useful for other things. As are Android tablets for that matter.

Lowrance for hard desert off roading. No cell service for hours upon hours.

It works but it is so much easier to load widely available map data straight into a tablet. Lowrance doesn't play well with others and the tiny memory card (capacity) isn't the best.
