I off road in AZ in the desert and I had assumed a winch would be a luxury. Last week I was out with a couple of jeeps having a great day. Lots of narrow spots and desert pinstripes but overall a great day. Towards the end we were driving up a fairly steep hill on "the easy way up" to avoid 4 ft tall rock stairs and as I came around a corner I had to hug the outside of the trail to get around a boulder that had fallen on the trail. My tires were maybe 12" from the left edge of the road and I was driving maybe 3-5 MPH. Suddenly the left 2 ft of the road gave away and slid down the steep bank of the hillside. The drivers side front and rear tires were basically hanging off the cliff and my truck was high centered front, center and rear. Tried to see if I could gently roll forward and back on the road with the rear locked and that generated a larger slide of the road down the side of the hill. Luckily one of the guys I was with had a winch. (Out of dozens of trips with many different guys, this was the first rig with a winch). He was able to pull me at a 45 degree angle and to get the truck back on solid ground.

SO.....I now need a winch. I've spend the past few days reading all I can on winches and I need some advice.
1) There are Warn, MileMarker, and Ramsey winches that have been around forever, have great reputations, and they will cost me $1500 for a 10-12K load winch with synthetic rope.
2) Lots of chinese made winches with names like Smittybilt, Superwinch, etc that will give me the same thing for $500-700.
3) I expect this to be an emergency winch that gets very seldom use, hopefully never. The intent is to be able to save my ass so I need to KNOW it will work when I need it.

The new Smittybilt X2O Gen 2 12K winch with wireless remote and synthetic rope is $699. Less than half of what Warn wants for a 10K version. If I get the remote on the Warn I'm looking at like $1700. I normally try to buy the best, but wow. Huge range.

From reading the web there are two camps.
1) Those who swear by Warn. Warn does have a great warranty and service reputation. I see very little on Ramsey and Mile Marker
2) Those who say it's stupid to spend on Warn and it's just branding.

What say those with experience?

I have the smittybilt x2o winch and it works as advertised. This was a good investment. I almost pulled the trigger on the warm given the service and reputation but opted to do the cheaper route. The winch has saved 2 trucks/jeeps from offroad activities and a bobcat from it's pool digging duties.

I would advise ya to go with the synthetic rope and make sure you get extra accessories YukonJoe has a winch maintenance thread on here with all kinds of good information.

The other thing I would advise ya to do is do some reading or training on various winching techniques and tips. Lots of stuff on the inter webs if ya search.

Here's what I did:

I'm in Central Phx and would be happy to show you my setup.

For serious offroading, I think a winch is a must. As far as brands, 4Wheelers Supply is a Warn Service center. They stock parts locally if something ever happens to it. I'm in the camp that feels Warn is the only way to go. I'm pretty sure a powerplant would fit in that location and the 9500# model should be sufficient. You can double the pulling power with a snatch block if needed.

I've had the SmittyBilt 10K X2O (waterproof) not wireless for the past 2 years.

Just recently I got to use it for the first time and it worked flawlessly.
For the money I couldn't beat it plus like you said you only use it once in a blue moon if that.
I couldn't see dumping that kind of money on something I would barely use but only for emergencies.
Now if your going to use it all the time then maybe a Warn but for the money you pay for one Warn you can almost buy 3 Smittybilts.

When your ready to buy one look me up RSiWORKS and I'll see what price I can get you one for.
If I were buying one now I definitely would get this one.

I have the recon 10,500 with synthetic rope. It's been a very good winch to me. I've used it multiple times and it has performed well. Even when I was still learning what to not do with a winch.

This was my first winch and the price was right. I had no idea how often I would use it, but I'm glad to have it.

When you narrow down your choices let us know if you have any specific questions.

Another expense is the mounting plate. That can cost you up to $300 alone. Outlaw, SDHQ, WSI, RPG are all forum sponsors who make which mounts. I think a few others do as well.

The SDHQ plate is really nice, but it's $400. There are plenty of F150's out there with the Rough Country plate and I never read of one bending or having any issues of any type. I can tell you that fitment in the Raptor is perfect.

I bought mine off of Amazon with a coupon. I think I paid $200 shipped.

Do you think you could fit WSI lights or Rigid Dually lights on either side of the mount?
