whats the purpose of that latch ? Does it free up space? I looked at the pictures but it's unclear what it's replacing

The purpose of the seat release is to provide an easy way to gain access to the backside of the rear seat. In order to currently get back there, you have to hook a lever that is hard to see and then pull up. There are plenty of do it yourself type of mods out there that achieve the same results, this is just one very clean and simple one. It does not add or subtract any space, it just makes the process of lowering the rear seat very easy. As others have mentioned, depending upon your trucks configuration (ie subwoofer), there may not be a ton of room back there to really store much.
