My understanding (not a mechanic) is that the gas cools the fuel pump. So depending on the outside temp, and the length of drive, you may need quite a bit of gas to keep it cool. That is why most modern vehicles show miles to empty 0, when there is still gas in the tank.

All you need is enough gas to keep the pump submerged which isn't all that much, but yes... You probably don't want to go as low as 0 miles to empty.
