My theory is that a lot of people are driving around in Sport mode expecting the shifts to be as smooth as they are in normal mode. While it would be nice to simply have the better throttle response without the harsher shifts, it's a packaged deal unfortunately.

This isn't related to Sport Mode. Sport will certainly be a harsher and quicker shift. This happens in Normal.

I too have a mix of smooth shifts and harder shifts on my 19. It happened more earlier on but as I’ve put miles on it feels like it’s smoothed out. Almost as if was learning my driving style. I had some really hard shifts cruising around but I think the transmission was getting confused a bit as I feel like it happened more when I took my foot off the gas close to when it was going to upshift. Letting off the gas and then the truck shifting up seemed to produce the most harsh shifts early on.

Occasionally on full throttle I’ll get some slight hesitation and a hard shift in the lower gear range (3rd or 4th). It’s definitely harder than it should be at times but that too has smoothed out over time. Nothing I feel I need to take to the dealer for but just some observations during my 11k run with it so far.

I wish the 10 speed would use all the gears. When it’s cold it seems to at least use the first five gears. But once the trans comes up to temp, it’s skips 2 and 4 and maybe 6 driving around town.

my 18 hard shifts come and go. in normal mode, the shifts when driving casual, go 1-3-5-7-8-9-10. skips 2-4-6. Where I get "hard" shifts is when I change throttle input near the time when the shift is about to happen. It is like the computer has to suddenly change from a 3 to 5 shift...and switch to a 3 to 4 shift. the shift to 4 is what is hard.

When in sport mode, i get "firm" shifts all the time. but i see it as a positive. in sport there are no skipped gears.

I had that issue too with my 18 they refreshed with updated programming seems fine now.

Mine would intermittently act up but mostly when the truck had sat for a few hours or more.
1,2,3 all good with light to moderate throttle then bang 5th or 6th gear.
It would only happen once then be fine for days

I would bet dollars to donuts the transmission program is the same in 19.

Has anyone checked the transmission fluid level? My dealer said they couldn't do it (??????).

I got the Whipple Stage 1 kit largely for improved shifting logic and while it helped tremendously, I still occasionally have a VERY hard shift or a hanging gear that refuses to downshift for what seems like an eternity. The occasional hard shift happens in normal or sport mode and the hanging gears seem to be only a sport mode issue.

You have to have the dealer hook up the computer to the (whatever) tool and download the most current code. If you don’t tell them to do this, they will simply run a VIN check and say ‘you’re fine’. My local stealership did the same to me. 2nd time I told them - hook to the computer, download and install most current ( pcm, tcm, etc. ? ) code.
Then they balked again, saying they only did that for warranty issues, did I have a complaint. I made one up.

Yes, you have to tell them. Same thing here, they flashed the PCM and all is well.

I definitely have had a handful of hard shifts in normal mode. The shifting in sport mode is what I would expect from sport mode and is nowhere near as hard as the odd shifting in normal mode. I would describe what I'm experiencing as feeling like you dumped a clutch while cruising around 4-5k rpm and kept it in the same gear. It isn't consistent enough to trust the dealership to even be able to replicate it though.

Have you guys tried unplugging the battery for a few minutes to clear out whatever the PCM has "learned" and get it to re-adapt to your driving style?
