Apples and oranges. Your rack was probably raw and unfinished metal. The OEM wheels have a crazy hard clear topcoat that needs to be removed before the powder will stick. Only way to do that is media blast them, which can be pretty labor intensive. $200 total seems just about right to me all things considering.

Hmm.... so if this coating is removed, how well will the powder coat hold up to the winter elements and salt? That would probably change my mind...

Well, I'm not an expert so take all this with a grain of salt.

But I have been down this road before. I had a set of OEM SRT wheels pc'd for my Dodge Magnum build:

I never had a problem with any road grime or the elements. I didn't spend a ton of time in the snow, but they did see it and therefore salt on occasion. Also, I dragged raced 'er, and these things were always exposed to bleach, chlorine and molten rubber. Never had an issue.

The only trouble I did have was with rock chips from the road. PC is tough, but it does chip.

So IMHO the bottom line is I wouldn't worry about salt or the elements, but I'm not sure how long the coating will last on a truck that regularly sees dirt. Especially one like yours Joe...

By the way I should point out that the wheels you see in my pictures were done in three stages: the white powder was baked on first, then the black was baked on after taping off the appropriate areas, followed by an all over clear powder bake. It was that clear powder that really made the finish tough as nails.

OP: do yours have a clear powder over the black?

I did mine over a year ago: Method 5 stars to match the color of the Raptor and 6.2 badges (gun metal grey), complete wast of money in my opinion. My wheels are almost back to black and will leave them that way. If your truck is going to only see minimal off-road it's fine, other wise save your money.

I did not. These will be my on road wheels/tires. I have a sweet set of methods w tires w more aggressive tread for offroad/winter use. I hated the look of the stock wheels prior to doing this, now I really like them. Not a bad idea to have them clear coated but I don't think that you can have a matte finish w the clear coat? Not super worried about the durability, they seem pretty tough. Guy that did them said that they may need to be redone every few years. Not sure ill have then that long.

I've had my stock rims powder coated for over 2 years now. Got a small eraser sized chip on 1 rim. Guy who did the work is going to fix for free. It's lasted really well.

powder coating is a process where you spray your wheels with fine dust of paint. And then you bake your wheels for the paint to adhere to the wheels. Much more durable then painted wheels. If you wanted to change the color then you just paint over them or apply a diff powder coat.

I don't know anything about powder coating. Is that removable if you change your mind?
