good deal? thinking about pulling the trigger

Hi all,

i currently have a 2019 4Runner TRD pro but have always wanted a raptor. this one popped up on carmax and seems like a good deal. any opinions? it is a 2017, avalanche, 802a and technology package with 33k miles for 56k.

ive placed it on hold pending an appraisal on my TRD pro.

any input on if it is a good deal or not would be appreciated. ive heard about possible transmission and enigne problems on the 2017, but plan on getting the Flood ford ESP if i do buy it.

I think it’s on the high end for a 2017 nearly out of warranty. A new 2019 can be had for $10k more.

The 2017 plastic oil pan is also a big deterrent.

stupid question.. can the 2017 plastic oil pan be swapped out for a 2018? ive seen that the drain plug can be switched out with a ronin drain plug.

1. The pan can be swapped.
2. I have a 2018 built in February, and have had no problems so far (plastic oil pan).

2017 was the first year of the Gen 2’s. They made some changes since then. If it’s a good truck you should be happy with it.

For around 56K, can probably find a 2018, then pull the trigger; you'll be glad you did.

i got my 2017 802 with 7500 miles for $59k in NJ about two months ago

@BTB thinks anything that’s not a bmw is over priced :p

he’s kinda right tho, 33k miles and it’s at Carmax. could be innocent enough or could have some underlying, and frustrating issue. What do service records say?

You can buy up warranty still, is the ’19 market that solid though - an 802A loaded for 66k?

I’d look at it this way.
Ask for a cold start up check. Bring a laser thermometer and check the temp of the block / exhausts before startup. check underneath for leaks, thoroughly, paying close attention to the oil and transmission pans, seals on the transfer case, cv joints, etc.

fire it up cold - ice cold, having sat at least overnight. Record it.
you’d be listening for 2 types of rattles; the first from the rear of the engine area, the waste gate rattle - it’s normal. There is a chance of the startup rattle coming from the front of the engine. there’s ’normal’, transient rattle, just is noisy and goes away - and there’s the ‘marbles in a can’ rattle. The latter is not ideal and likely an engine tear down to fix. If you hear the marbles in a can rattle and it’s longer than a second or 2 in duration, pass.

take a long test drive, cane it pretty good, test out normal and sport mode at least, transfer case, and see if it shifts oddly. the 10 speed has a reputation for harsh shifting, particularly in sport mode. Mine’s been good, and no, I’m not drinking coffee while cruising around in sport mode, but some trucks do have unhealthy harsh shifting.

thanks for the inputs!

carmax offered 38k for my 2019 TRD pro.. felt it was too low. guess ill have to sell it privately and keep an eye out for an '18.
