@dillard09 last question: was this TX or CA? Feels like labor costs might reflect differently depending on location
It was in Texas. I had some repairs done in CA not long ago. It was at Galpin Auto. They did a great job but we're a bit expensive. I'll see if I can dig what they charged an hr.
Where are you at?

I'm in central coast CA, shop is in San Luis Obispo, so rates aren't cheap. 195 /h at the dealer and local shop.

Got the dealer price back for new long block and turbos, no radiator and it was still Just under $21k. Got the local shop to reduce their cost enough and throw in diff/transfer case service and inspection as a part of the overall work.

Def a good start. I use to live in Ventura so I know SLO.

If you plan on keeping it you might have that transmission/tcase looked at as well since it seems the previous owner was maybe negligent on oil changes.
They said they’d include the transfer case/diff service with such a big job. Transmission was looked at less than 10k ago thankfully.

Question; whats the KBB for a regular 2017 Raptor with 172XXX miles? Maybe mid- to high-30's? There's zero chance of doing that swap and "getting your money's worth" out of it. I am in no way criticizing, because I've got about $50K invested in a 2011 G1 with 148xxx miles.
If you're looking at options for a pull-out engine package, I'd consider looking at Hennessey's shop in Texas. https://www.hennesseyspecialvehicles.com/ Their customers are investing huge dollars with him when they do engine swaps and tend to bring in very well maintained vehicles. A friend of mine bought a (very low mileage) complete G2 Raptor engine, trans, and transfer case from them for $10K, and had it tweaked for his Class 7 race truck. They ended up with a package capable of racing all day at 600hp, that can be boosted to 700hp when necessary.
That’s funny. I may have met your buddy at the last Baja 1000? Talked to a guy in line at tech and sounds very familiar @TomDirt

I just replaced my motor in the fall here in Gilbert AZ with a brand new Ecoboost for $21k with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. My truck had 93,000 miles (it’s a 2018) and I change the oil at 5000 miles regularly. Major bummer. I looked into several 5.0 or 7.3 options and they were at least double and sometimes triple what I paid to repair it.

These guys? The Chamlee's pretty much OWN class 7. Their latest truck is a Ranger tube frame chassis (with that Raptor motor), a Tremec 5 speed transmission, with 4" King Kong shocks and 40" BFG's. He's got a Gen 1 Raptor daily driver, too!image.png

This is a little off subject, but it ties in with the former owner saying he performed regular maintenance. When I do self-maintenance, I go to carfax and record the maintenance, along with uploading my receipts for parts. It goes a long way in assuring the next buyer that the maintenance was actually performed. When I sold my 2015 F150 3.5eb with 210k, I passed my binder with all of the repair & maintenance receipts to him, as well. For my Raptor, I'm also doing a blackstone-labs oil report every other oil change. I do full synthetic oil changes every 5k. BTW, the reports confirm the oil is still in healthy ranges, so I feel confident that I don't need to do them more frequently.
