So is their mounting system pretty solid? I see the levers are metal, but is the mount metal, not plastic?

Yes, if you watch his Youtube video, you mount them essentially anywhere you want (within the general area) so there's some leeway there. Yes it's solid! Best I remember the base is plastic and the arms are aluminum but it seems stout and works great.
