What about those who are running a tune? Flash back to stock, take it in, and then reflash the tune? Or, is a new tune needed to accommodate the changes?

I am asking for a friend... ;)

It will need to be flashed back to stock, and then your tune will need to be updated with the revised VCT parameters.

Count me among the curious how a PCM update is going to prevent cam phaser failure. I've got two ideas:

1. It can somehow affect oil pressure or oil delivery to the phasers? I am not familiar with this system, and I have no idea if that is possible.
2. They are going to change the behavior of the phasers regarding the cam timing.

If #2, I bet dollars to donuts it will cause a decrease in power output.

This post brought to you by our sponsor, Wild Speculation.

Well, at least you admit it was wild speculation.

Cam phasing has more to do with emulating EGR and cold start catalyst lightoff than peak power. Cam phasing is the reason these engines can pass emissions without an EGR system. They can’t modify the operation of the system in a way that would increase emissions, so they still need to function as they currently do. Therefore, there is no reason there would be a change in power output.

I am pleased to hear that it shouldn't affect power.

I don't pretend to know everything. I do try to link concepts together and figure shit out if I can, with the knowledge that I may not have the full picture. Valve timing affects power. Cam phasers affect valve timing. It seemed a strong possibility. But I'm happy to learn and be wrong today.

since cam phasers seem to be issue only at start up maybe valve timing at cold start up? I like you like to have an understanding and figure it out also!

I have a light rattle at startup for about 2-3 seconds when it's cold, but it's not as bad as some I've heard; which leads me to believe mine may be the turbo flutter some experience.

I'm on Ford pass but haven't received that message yet. I'm the secondowner of a 2017, dealer couldn't provide service records so I'm unsure if any cam phaser work was done. I came from a 5.4 3v and I DO NOT want to go through that goat FK again:biggun: @smgilles not to get off subject but your IWE grinding, does it sound like brake grinding during deceleration without the high pitch squeal? I think I'm having the same issue.....and before anyone gets on my ass yes I checked the brakes and rotors first. Plenty of pad left and rotor face is smooth as glass

What is it? I have that same weird noise... could not figure out where it was coming from waited a couple of weeks...it got worse, also had a mechanical tapping after the engine was warmed up. my 2019 w/23k miles is sitting right now at Koons Ford in VA. They said they were stumped with grinding at deceleration. Update today, they have repaired the cam phasers and installed a brand new...exhaust?! They said I should have it back today.
Does this make sense to anyone?

Yes.. the notice on my Ford Pass auto deleted after 2 days! This morning my Ford tech hooked the Ford IDS laptop and I am running the latest version of the PCM software that was installed in September 2020 during the CAM Phaser repair! The most current PCM software version for MY2017 is: IDS-120.07
