So this may not be what you are experiencing, but occasionally when either:

1. There is not enough oil in the shock, the front of floating piston will slam into the resivor on extension
Or
2. If there is not enough air in the resivor the back of the piston will fully compress and slam on the opposite side during compression.
Or
3. There is proper air pressure but too much oil, number 2 can still happen.

Again maybe not what you are experiencing but common on shocks with a floating piston.

On a factory-built, QC-checked shock, (from an "industry leader"), which retails for a grand? Maybe on a used set with unknown history, but if that came from Fox..

Right, I am not saying the noise is normal, I am saying one cause of such a noise could be the above reasons. Also if the pressure is low the end cap can get sucked off the snap ring under vacuum as the piston moves with the shock shaft and snap back causing noises like described.

Edit to add: it is very possible a shock looses pressure just sitting in a box

I think you mean Vista Outdoor. But that was Fox Racing division, totally separate from Fox Factory (shock company).

I have brand new Fox 3.0 installed not long ago, they are totally fine, even after a trip out to the desert and hitting a large whoop accidentally.

Blackrock is the majority stock owner of both Fox divisions. As far as fox 3.0 there are many threads describing the same problem. Fox does not care about quality control anymore.

Where are you seeing this? Because I see nothing about this regarding Blackrock is a majority shareholder.
