Anything is possible but void my warranty on the part that I removed and threw in the dumpster? What would it "void my warranty" on? How would cutting off a foot-and-a-half of pipes void anything?

by doing so you have alter the truck from its original state from the factory which is no different then someone putting on a cat-back. Your warranty can be voided for modifying the truck or because you cut it off "misuse and abuse" which is the catch all that some Ford dealers because they can.

Fixed that for ya.
No it would void the whole warranty. By cutting off the muffler section slightly improves the volumetric efficiency of the motor will in turn drop vacuum in the motor which can effect the MAP sensor can throw everything off from the VCT to the trans line pressures.

This is an old debate, and every case is totally different. However, i believe I can say with confidence cutting a bit of exhaust pipe off will not void your whole warranty.

Agreed.

There's no way a mod will void a vehicle's complete warranty. Well, I shouldn't say "no way" because anything is possible.

US Code - Title 15, Chapter 50, Sections 2301-2312
Legally, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty on a vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused or contributed to the failure in the vehicle (per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)) . For best results, consider working with performance-oriented dealerships with a proven history of working with customers. If your vehicle manufacturer fails to honor emission/warranty claims, contact EPA at (202) 260-2080 or www.epa.gov. If federal warranty protection is denied, contact the FTC at (202) 326-3128 or www.ftc.gov. For additional information, check out the following links:

Yes, it can. No, auto maker is going to waste their time fighting on a warranty claim it you drop that Mag-Moss Act. They site misuse and abuse and be done with you but like I said in the original post this all matters on your relationship with your service team.

That's complete BS. The only thing he voided warranty on is the exhaust; end of story. What he has done affects no other part of the truck in any way. The Mag-Moss Act is not something that is "dropped" by people who mod vehicles, it is the LAW regardless of your relationship with the dealer.

Like someone mentioned, this topic has been discussed ad nauseam on every enthusiast site there is, no need to beat this dead horse any further.

I'm not going to argue with on how dealers and auto makers void warranties everyday for without proving that's said mod caused the failure.
Yes cutting off the tail pipe section effect other parts of the truck. This an OBD 2 truck and fairly complex one at that. These trucks have a similar ecu like the 05 + Mustang which where if you rotate the 90 degrees in any direction it will cause the car to go into limp mode.

Tank, I removed about 18" of tailpipe and there have been no ill effects since.

And certainly my warranty is now and will remain intact.

Tank is not completely off base here... I know of a case where a Toyota dealer refused to warranty an air conditioning failure because the owner had installed heavy duty skid plates on the FJ. Did the skid plates cause or contribute to the failure? Not at all. The reason for the denial was that he "obviously" used the FJ off road and that use constituted "abuse" which in the dealer's opinion voided the Toyota warranty on the entire vehicle... and Toyota backs up their dealers pretty hard on things like this. Just FYI, going to court on something like this costs way more than the vehicle is probably worth...

To be fair, there was another FJ owner in AZ that pretty much destroyed parts on his FJ on a regular basis doing some serious rock crawling and his dealer covered it all under warranty.

That's why the dealer relationship thing is so important. As well as buying a Ford! (Ford treated me very well when I broke an axle while off roading... first class attitude from the manufacturer as well as the dealer!)

That said, Dan didn't cut off his muffler or anything... just a couple of feet of tailpipe. I doubt Ford would void his entire warranty vehicle warranty for that.

The biggest problem IMHO could be at "smog time" in California when the state decides he's "modified" his emissions system or something crazy like that...

So Tank, given your perspective on the ease with which deaers can "void the warranty," I assume you're very comfortable knowing your warranty may be "gone" due to the engine, exhaust system and tune mods you've made.

The one concern I have with this kind of perspective is that it scares owners from making any mods and that would be a shame if that's the result.

That's why folks who aren't familar with the Magnuson-Moss Act should be as all vehicle owners do have rights in regard to their factory warranty.
