I didn’t say you could get away with just Deavers, since I am one of the guys who got the extra shocks as shown in this post. :) But yeah, other people have said as much. I have a 950lb tongue weight to deal with. The extra shocks seemed a better solution to me. I may get the Deavers, too, as the OP and everyone else has told me how much they improve the ride—even when not towing.

Apologies. I got names mixed up. Looks like @brettmess24 was the one who recommended the Deaver setup. I don’t see how that could help appreciably with towing and not stiffen the ride unloaded.

Ideally we’d have adjustable shocks that would do towing and off-road well. I know everyone is thrilled about these new shocks for 2019, but I don’t think they’re quite up to the challenge of preventing sag on 950lbs tounge weight like these assist shocks can.

Nice work! This is exactly the type of set up I am looking for except in a first gen model. I soon will be occasionally towing a 9000lb trailer and was searching for a better solution other than airbags, spring helpers or bump stop kits. I'm in Sacramento as well. Would you mind PMing me the shop information? Id like to give them a shout and see if they would be able to create the same for my gen 1. Thanks

Edit:

Nevermind I found his contact information. Thanks

Your springs carry the weight not your shocks. Don’t have to take my word for it, look at the multiple threads on deavers and nobody is complaining about an overly stiff ride from the HD set up.

950lb tongue weight is a lot for any half ton truck as well as 9000 lbs is a lot to tow with a Raptor. Better upgrade those brakes!;)

So far I have added the R1 Concepts Brake package, Steel Brake Lines, European Trans Cooler and a Class 5 hitch. My truck also has the trailer brake system. I'm hoping Ill be fine. I've seen people tow 15k+ with this truck. I'm thinking 8850 with a weight distribution hitch should be aight.

Love me some R1,;) call Scott at Deaver before you do anything. My Gen1 screw had a better spring rate than my Gen2. I fixed my two biggest complaints on either truck with deaver and R1 Concepts two great companies you can ask questions too. Both in Cali.

In the assist shock setup featured in this thread the shocks carry the preload along with the springs. I feel like we're circling the same discussion here. You keep implying that Deavers are a solution to the problem posted here and if they are awesome, but if not then it needs to be plainly stated. I do not see how HD Deavers on their own can possibly be a solution for this problem (towing with heavy tongue weight without sag). And if you start adding adjustable bump stops the price is now shooting up.

I think the solution presented here is great. Deavers might be a nice addition, but if I had to choose one there's not much of a choice.

I'm scheduled to have the RPG folks install their Stage 3 rear suspension kit on my '17 SCREW in a couple weeks, right before I pick up my new travel trailer at the Pomona show. The trailer's 4,700 pounds dry, so probably 5,500 pounds full of water and junk, which leads to a 550 pound tongue weight. I also want to be able to put a couple of dirt bikes in the bed of the truck, so that's another 500 pounds out of the 1200-pound payload, and the wife + I together ain't 150 pounds!

RPG's suggesting custom Deavers to handle the weight, and I agreed with them until I ran across this thread. Now I'm thinking of going with the +2 Deavers (since I only load the bikes and hitch up the trailer on the weekends—otherwise it's my daily driver) to improve the rear end when daily driving, but getting Izzy's air shocks to handle the bikes + trailer on the weekends.

Does that make sense, or am I missing something?

Go with the custom deavers. It’ll make a huge difference. That and this setup is the way to go. I have almost the exact same setup (weight-wise) as what you describe, less the bikes. Trailer is 4700 lbs dry and 6,000 pounds fully loaded. I’m at 770 tongue weight (before WD bars which reduces about 30% of that) and carry about 350 lb in the bed). With this setup I can have the truck be completely level.

I have deaver + 3's in my truck. I tow a toy hauler with a 800lbs tongue weight with it while using a blue ox sway pro hitch. No issues here. I never even get close to my hydro bumps.

As I mentioned above, I’m close to this tongue weight with my trailer and sure, it isn’t close to bottoming out, but even with my +3’s, it still sags some. I’m sure you know this, but if you’re not towing very far or often, not a big deal. Over time though??..... the shock doesn’t like to be cycling through when being compressed like that.
