if you drive around with a dog in your bed you're a ******* *******. Would you put a child back there?

Get a crate. Buy an Impact one if you can afford it. which if you own a raptor you should be able to.

Or harness them inside to a seatbelt. I've seen 100 pound dogs become meat missiles in vehicle and aircraft accidents.

^ this.

I won't drive in congested areas or on highways without crating. Besides the obvious risk of losing the dog, the liability of a loose dog jumping out of the bed and potentially causing an accident is a non-starter for me.

Trail riding and quick trips down the road to the park though I like to let him enjoy the open bed. Now that it's warming up here in AZ he'll be going in the cab with a hammock-like set up covering the rear bench.

Very nice crates ... shockingly expensive ...

My wife and I did discuss this and both agreed we won't do bed without crating, just need to find a solid crate that won't run $1799 per dog.

the impact crates are airline approved and some are collapsible. Thats why i like them. my impact crates are used for everything. truck, house, travel, fly. everything.
But they are expensive if you have multiple dogs. The owens link i posted above is a DIY kit. Owens makes outstanding truck bed dog crates. I dont use one because the impact is lighter and airline approved so it fills many uses. But owens diy kit is basically just their door, vents and some corners. You add plywood walls and you have a budget version of their nice crates. I might be building one of these for a freind of mine who needs a truck box but cant afford an impact.

I fold the back seat up and allow my dogs to roam. My daughter sits in a car seat next to them and everyone coexists well back there. My only gripe is the door card will be getting banged up over time as they jump up to look out of the window. If there was something to slip over that, life would be good.

I finished making my own cover for the rear cab.
What do you think? It is held in place by headrest loops.

I may put side panels on it with zippers too, haven't decided yet.

ARE shell with a shelf for the dogs, I do a lot of bird hunting with the pointers and this allows them to see out the widows and be comfortable.
only 40 pound dogs though.
