Do the "Street Lock" rings on wheels *do* anything?

Any multi piece wheel on the street is illegal. DOT thinks that 2-3 piece wheels have the chance to fall apart while driving down the road thereby creating massive carnage.

Such utter ********.

That is not true at all and some new vehicles come with multi-pc wheels mostly the high end cars. Here something new Fuel wheels been working on 2-pc custom build truck wheels available for 2012.

Dammit! Does that mean I can't use my spinners on my truck anymore?

Well, that's debatable because I know some guys consider the Hummer H1 to be a dump truck... The 2006 came with 2 piecers from the factory and so does the Lamborghini LP560-4 OEM upgraded wheels.

Good point. When I think 2 piece I think of the ones that can kill you when you air them up for the first time.

I don't know of any DOT Beadlock though. Not like anyone is going to question you though. They are friggin expensive too.

My Correction:

For multi-piece wheels to be DOT legal, they have be DOT approved. MOST do not have it. My Jong Bloed 3 piece wheels are not DOT approved. My Method Beadlock wheels on the Raptor are not DOT approved either.

As to what makes a wheel DOT approved, I do not know. I would love to know though.

As for Lambo's..they are ILLEGAL in Nashville, TN. Banned. Not allowed at all. You can not even drive through the city on your way through town. Police will pull you over and make you go around Nashville. Stupid law imo.

Ok hold on a sec... there's no "DOT approval" process any part must undergo; its not the same as something like a UL label or CARB sticker. Instead the DOT sets the spec, and its up to the manufacturers to adhere to that spec.

Here's the real problem though: get in an accident running non-DOT complaint parts, and your insurance will bend over backwards to not pay. Give them ANY reason to void coverage, and they'll take it. Sometimes it doesn't even matter that the part in question had nothing to do with the accident; you violated your policy by having them on the truck so therefore they are not obligated to cover you. Period. You can sue your insurer, and sometimes you'll win and sometimes not. But either way you're gonna pay.

Depending on the non-DOT part or install too, your state's DVM has come behind those spec's and created codes (sometimes called "laws", but they're really not) for them. For example headlight or turn signal colors in California have to be a very specific thing. On the other hand, the CA DMV has no code for or against bead locks (there is a gray area here, but "beadlock"s specifically are not against DMV code; you can search for yourself here: http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vc.htm)

Bottom line? Those beadlocks maybe technically be legal, so you don't get a ticket. But your insurance might/probably point at them and say you violated policy, see ya later. Ya probably dont want to go there.

I don't think the insurance would have any jurisdiction if the non-DOT part is stock OEM. Stock OEM is the "best" that one can run in terms of insurance coverage.

The OEM part is not going to be non DOT. I would be blown away if an OEM such as GM would leave themselves so wide open to class action legalities.

Don't misunderstand... there are DOT complaint beadlocks out there. Off the top of my head Champion comes to mind. I think internal beadlocks as a general rule are also DOT complaint.

Here... spend some time reading this. Its as accurate as I've found anywhere (it even specifically mentions Hummer OEM beadlocks): http://www.liftlaws.com/are_beadlocks_street_legal.htm
