Do the "Street Lock" rings on wheels *do* anything?

I'm just curious if these "street lock" a.k.a. fake beadlock wheel rings actually serve a purpose? Are they intended to extend farther over the wheel (after the tire is mounted) to provide some level of protection from de-beading? Or are they purely for show given that proper beadlocks tend to be illegal on the street?

Should be for show. I haven't heard that true beadlocks are illegal though.

Well, they do protect the wheel from curb damage. That's why I have them. There are 16" curbs in parts of DC, if I hit one, I can just pick up a new ring (100$) instead of a new wheel (400$).

Ditto. Why would beadlocks be illegal?

Any multi piece wheel on the street is illegal. DOT thinks that 2-3 piece wheels have the chance to fall apart while driving down the road thereby creating massive carnage.

Such utter ********.

I've never heard of that. There are some vehicles that come from the factory with multi-piece wheels. Maybe this is a recent law?

Like dump trucks from the 50s?

Also, beadlocks tend to break bolts off in the rim, which is pretty lame. Unless you really have a need for them, I would steer clear.

Well, that's debatable because I know some guys consider the Hummer H1 to be a dump truck... The 2006 came with 2 piecers from the factory and so does the Lamborghini LP560-4 OEM upgraded wheels.
