6011 would be more prone to cracking if welded to cast iron, but definitely a good rod for general purpose stuff. That and 6010. That was what i used mostly when I was a pipe welder.

I'm sorry I've been busy and havn't check this thread in a few days.
I used a 309 filler. I had my friend that owns the Tig do the preheating with a rose bud. Kept it hot then moved away while I welded. Then he'd come back in and heat more as we moved along. Took a couple hours to complete but this way we had preheat and heat as we welded. Then for cool down we used a trash can with sand. Covered the parts with the sand for a slow cool down.
I could have done it with a mig but I know that the Tig weld is strong. The trick to cast is to get the cast hot enough to not crack when you add the heat of the weld and cause the cast to crack. That's why preheating is a must on cast.

Not sure who makes these but I got them from TMX in Texas. They are 4130 and rather than take my chances on messing up the weld I went to the Welder ****. The Welder **** has a kiln for pre-heating and cool down. The guy just ahead of me was trying to be cute with him and you guessed it, ONE YEAR, NO WELDING FOR YOU! BTW Brandon at TMX is a great guy super service!

Looks just like the ones I put on from Outlaw racing. Nice job of welding. What did you have to pay for everything done?
