In this "How To" I will show where the wire loom for the transfer case shift motor is located so that you may inspect it and apply dielectric grease to its connector.
This is a good preventative measure that may save you a lot of frustration down the road when you shift into 4x4 mode,
as water or debris may cause an adverse effect on engagement.
Tools you will need:
Vehicle lift or ramps (I use ramps)
Wheel chocks
Latex gloves
Shop towels
Dielectric Grease (I use Super Lube)
1/4" x 1 1/2" standard screwdriver (stubby screwdriver)
Flashlight
Small Mirror
Under car creeper
Portable air tank with air nozzle
Lets get started:
If you are using vehicle ramps, then locate a flat, dry and clean surface to park your raptor onto them.
Set the parking brake.
Chock the rear wheels too.
Now get the under car creeper and get under the vehicle and locate the transfer case.
It is mounted behind the transmission.
Locate the wire loom on top of the transfer case shift motor assembly
Now take the screwdriver and depress the clip.
At the same time separate the connector with your other hand
Inspect the female side of the connector for mud, dirt or trapped water.
Then use the flashlight and small mirror and inspect the male side of the connector.
Now use the compressed air to clear out the connector ends of debris, water and moisture
Now pack the connector ends with dielectric grease.
Super Lube is excellent. It is temperature rated at -45 deg F to +450 deg F
Now assemble the connector together.
Make sure you hear the click of the tab going back into lock position.
Give a slight pull to make sure the connector is locked together.
Then clean up any excess grease.
Clean everything up and take your Raptor for a test drive.
Find a safe straight section of road then stop.
Engage 4H and wait for the "4x4 HIGH" prompt on the information display to light up.
Drive a small amount (No turning if you are on pavement).
Stop.....Place gear selector into "N" (neutral).
Engage 4L and wait for the "4x4 LOW" prompt on the information display to light up.
Drive a small amount (No turning if you are on pavement).
Stop....Place the gear selector into "N" (neutral).
Engage 2H and wait for the "4x2" prompt to light up on the information display.
Place the gear selector into "D" (drive). After several seconds the "4x2" prompt will go away on the information display.
Repeat test steps above if you wish.
Go have fun!
