Diamondback cover. Is it me? Not Feeling it

Granted, I’m weird. And I’ve only had it for a few days. I’ve had the canister type before and the hard rollback kind. Both of those give unfettered access to the bed. Yes the canister takes up room, some more than others.

I always liked a flush cover. That said, I decided on my new truck to get a so-called real cover, a manly cover. I can use help in that department.

no doubt it’s stout. No doubt with the extra gasket on bed rail near window it will be waterproof. No doubt it’s a strong sucker. Locks are probably the best.

the hinges are half baked, slightly askew and ugly.

I got the smooth finish and like it.

got the SE cover as I’ll never put anything super heavy up on it.


So far, a solid B, being generous a B+.


Bed access at the tailgate end, a B.

Bed access, and my main complaint, at the cab end, a solid F.

maybe I should have realized that. But I think I consumed, as I always do, at least 20 or more YouTube videos on it and close to every thread here. Bed access was not really covered to any great extent.

so while for now I’ll keep it, keep your eyes peeled in the garage section.

I don’t like the bed covers in general, but I did look the DB. I opted for something less expensive because I know the one I got wouldn’t be permanent. Not that I don’t like it. For what it is, I can’t help but be satisfied with it. I knew the day I installed it I’d find a need to use the entire bed space and sure enough... I did. I worked around the access issue, but there are some advantages to a cover.

So I got a tri-fold model -hat tip to supporting vendor real truck which is pretty easy to deal with, install is a snap, and so de-install won’t be dramatic and it’s pretty easy to live with. One thing that concerns me is really caning the truck off road. I know a lot of guys here have them and I’m sure some hard core types are campaigning them successfully but I can envision some serious off roading would put the mount points under a lot of stress.

Oh well. I need garage space before I can take the bed cover off, so more unpacking.

I had known about Diamond Back covers since my entry into the truck word, always wanted one for the rugged look and build quality. With the Raptor, I never actually wanted to get a cover , but family needs dictated installing. My one requirement was that I need to run a set of bed racks for ladders and fishing poles. I was not fond of the DB compatible racks. A member on here hacked a TracRac onto his cover, but I still didn't like the look/functionality for my needs.

I ended up with Retrax Pro XR for a cover and have been happy with it. You do lose about 11"x11" of bed space to the canister on an already small bed , access to tie downs is restricted but otherwise is well engineered. On a recent 220mile drive i threw a couple plastic totes on top of the cover (50/60lbs) and strapped them to the Yakima uprights, cover held no problem.

We put the Retrax cover on my wife’s ZR2 and she loves it. I went simple for the Raptor and got a Truxedo LoPro roll up cover. I’ve always had Truxedo’s on my trucks, and I really like them.

Nope, not painted. I had it first made of unobtanium but had buyer's remorse so was remade of stainless steel like the much touted and incredibly successful DeLorean.

That's a bummer. We've all done things like that. It was a foreseeable problem, though, so let it be a reminder next time you go shopping. I like to make a list. Must-have, like-to-have, don't care, don't want, can't stand. I did that with the Raptor and the tonneau both. My top priority for the tonneau was easy on/off, so DB didn't make my first cut, even though I liked the stoutness.

I hear ya. My issue was my last cover, all $900 of it, it was basically poorly made. The rubber baskets along the side sucked, ripped, etc. I knew the DB would be much more we’ll made and it is.

and really for me, I never park anywhere sketchy, never, I almost never have anything of value back there. I use my truck like a car so really didn’t need it.

my sister tried years ago to instill in me there are want days and need days. You can’t always have what you want. Well, I never listen. I want it, I get it. And sometimes I regret it. If I do, I’ll either throw it away or sell it and move on. At least no purchase is permanent.

The main thing with a tonneau, security-wise, as long as you don't park in really bad areas, is that your stuff is out of sight. That's huge.
