That might be one of the silliest posts in the history of this forum. ADM creates zero value to the customer and ONLY benefits the dealer.
Alot of dealers use the Doc Fees to establish and cover a minimum commission to the Finance guy in the event he does not sell any backend products and also to offset back office salaries of the folks processing the paperwork. While I agree some of the fees reported are excessive, they are nowhere near the ADMs reported by some buyers here.
ADMs are infinitely more defensible than doc fees--the dealer is telling you directly to your face that they believe the market value of the vehicle is higher than the MSRP and that their goal is to maximize their profit. That is the point of running a business, and you're (generally) told about it right up front.
Doc fees are completely fabricated charges intended to make it seem like the paperwork process is much more complicated than it is. The dealer is lying directly to your face in order to pack the deal on the back end, just like you say. It's borderline scammy, and the proof that they're aware of that is that they (generally) don't like to tell you about it until the last second.
The difference of my opinion of the two charges is not in the amount, but in the presentation.
Also, this is why so many people hate car dealers. I currently have six cars, and would trade a lot more often but simply tire of dealing with these games. "This is the price" right up until it's not = doc fees.
