I agree, maybe it’s a chicken vs egg issue. I’m saying the big intercoolers were primarily designed to get the biggest core in the highest airflow spot to maximize performance, then the fact they played nice with frame cut bumpers solidified their popularity, and even caused some running factory tunes to use them out of necessity.
