hey guys, i just noticed my drivers side CV boot is torn. After doing some research i'm seeing that if a boot gets torn you should replace the whole axle. I'm looking for axles now but was hoping one of the vendors could help me out. Also, i found one on RockAuto for $63 but the Ford Motorcraft is $393. that's a pretty big difference so i'm curious if i should go with the cheaper one or spend the money on Motorcraft? Also, i have noticed in the last few weeks a mechanical thinning noise when i coast to a stop. Only happens when slowing down and i can only hear it between 5-10mph. goes away under 5 and over 10 and i can't feel any difference at normal driving speed? wondering if it has to do with the torn boot? Internals damaged?

Heres the link for RockAuto

Any help is appreciated

I broke the passenger side off-roading and ended up replacing both so I have spares.

I went with the trackmotives myself and have had zero issues. I also don’t off-road very often. If you’re hardcore into it I’d say spend even more than the motorcraft from what I hear - RCV, etc.

Trackmotives have done me well for 7K mi and hot Midwest summers so far, time will tell how the boots hold through winter.

I used the rock auto to replace one of mine two years ago and haven’t had any problems. Now I noticed the boot on the other side is starting tear. I will be doing that one with rockauto also.

Are these tough to change? Fairly mechanically inclined but just wondering how long something like this would take to swap out?

You can do it. I’m the same. I’m pretty handy and was a little nervous but it wasn’t bad. Just watch a few videos and take your time.

Took me a good half a day. I don’t know much and had a friend who did help. I also did the IWE delete and flushed the front dif at the same time, so you may be able to get it done in an hour or two.

Good learning experience; reason I bought this truck.
