I think if you have a mx, you need to upgrade to pro rails to mount racks. The company shipped me the MX by mistake then they swapped out the pro rails.
As far as overheight gear, first make sure you cover retaining screws are adjusted properly. Mine weren't and although advertised as lock anywhere along the track, it is a really wimpy setup. By lock, it just means the cover won't easily slide for and aft. Not lock for theft. A good yank will open it. When fully closed, it is still weaker than I would like, but at least the locks sit in between plastic keepers to make it slightly more secure.
As far as securing gear when it is wide open, what the others said re waterproof and or wrapped. Trust me, don't use the cheap totes or thin tarp. Just a pain. Get good quality totes and heavy gauge tarp. But for me, I went with a small gladiator mesh cargo net. Comes w straps too. Doesn't keep out rain, just reduces the prying eyes and keeps things from flying out. Another layer of security, for grab and go crowd. And, if over a tarp, keeps tarp on your gear.
If you can't tell by now, I hate having shit flying around in the wind, rattling around loose. And live in a wet climate, so manage for that too.
