You're going to get a horrible resonance just off idle if you don't do a tune along with the CAI. Some are worse than others but the aFe stage II is horrible without a tune, at least on my truck it was. With a 5 star tune it ROCKS. They mod the tune to the length of the new CAI tube. Personally, I'd spend the cash on a tuner and drop in K&N and leave the stock box for now if funds are tight.

Look at the Volant CAI with a powercore filter.
It's probably one of the better offroad CAI's out there. Will probably run you closer to $500, but it's sealed off from the elements and does add a nice growl to the engine.

This is what we did to our Raptor before we got it Whippled. Worked great, and the sealed box really helps against no only mud/water, but also hardcore dust from dry dirt. We have them for sale as well, just toss a PM if ya want a quote.

The stock intake on the Raptor is a cold air intake. Just drop in a new filter from K & N or aFe and you're set to go. Cost about $40. There are advantages in keeping it stock. It's up to you...

There are real disadvantages to oiled filters like the K&N. The airflow can progressively blow oil vapors onto the air flow sensor, and the sensor will malfunction as a result. It happened to me on my previous truck with a K&N filter. It was a $100 fix and I'll never use an oiled filter again. That's why I went with the AIRAID. See here for my AIRAID installation thread:

How's it offroad? does it stay on snug? fine dust/dirt mud/water make it's way in?

I wouldn't know. I haven't taken it off road yet. It's held the same as the stock box, so I doubt it would come loose. It's an open design, so more air=more dust. There's a thread around discussing the merits of open box vs. closed box designs for off reading. If you expect mud and water to reach your air filter area, then an open box design might be problematic.
