Chocolate milkshake option on 6.2L?

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I will certainly provide updates if I get to do some more testing tonight (and then I will be out of town for 4-5 days so bear with me for a brief lack of updates coming up).

I haven't done any additional flushes after the first 3 limited "closed system" type approach. Was really wanting to gauge the improvement after each flush but with no real initial change (maybe not enough flushing yet) I think I will try the open drain approach the next go around and see if I can get to a fairly clear state.

Good point about the water being in the oil pan and not showing up elsewhere in the oil system. I have been checking the oil level periodically throughout this process and after the first pull of the filter to remove the cooler it got it to the top of the full mark. After changing the cooler and doing the first 3 flushes it looks like it is halfway between the min and max. I am not sure I have enough data points to determine if the level is going up/down or staying the same (maybe it only loses oil when running and gains water when cooling from high temps?).

I have an update after squeezing in a few hours of flushing this evening. Looks like adding the degreaser and doing the constant/running flush were the keys to making a real dent in the oil content of the water (which is so obvious to me in hindsight). Greatly appreciate getting me steered in the right direction.

I did a total of 7 more flushes, stopping each time once my 15 quart drain pan was full (took me about 15 minutes per flush). For the first 2 flushes I used water only and once I saw no real progress I jumped to using the degreaser for the next 3 flushes, followed by 2 more water only flushes to try and get the bulk of degreaser out. For the last 4 flushes I got the bright idea of using my family's annoying thirst for bottled water to my advantage instead of trying to reuse the large jugs. So here is where I ended up before running out of time...

(left most being flush #3 for baseline/reference, then #6-10 going to the right)



Not perfect but certainly looking like I am headed in the right direction!

Checking the oil level along the way it looks like things are steady and only fluctuate between 2/3 and half way in the safe corresponding with the oil filter being full versus drained when I checked. At least that is what I am hoping it is. When I get back in town and can get a few more flushes done I will drain the oil and see if there is any water in the pan.

FYI...here is what my gooey/weepy rubber hoses look like. Definitely will be replacing these once I get the coolant system flushed and squared away.

Just like 1bad454 said, I had some browninsh/greyish goo under the rad cap, nothing like yours....but I did develope a small leak at the oil cooler....I found one, for some reason they were/ are back ordered, swapped out all is good now mine is a 2013 with 94K on it, while I was in the front engine area I did the pulleys and a new belt

Yeah, the back order thing initially scared me a bit, but once I got my local parts department on the phone on Monday morning they were able to find one in town and have it same day.

I am curious if there is any easy/definitive way to determine that the cooler was the source of failure? Obviously, replacing the cooler and if the problem goes away works. I have seen the home brew pressure rigs. Anyone have any ideas on this?

With where you are now you should be able to run it and see if the problem comes back. Not very scientific :/

while i did not have your problem, i always had a leak somewhere in my cooling system and could never find it turns out it was that cooler that @EmbDriver posted. pretty much what @B E N said. try, see, and hope.
