Thanks for all the feedback so far. I will certainly provide updates if I get to do some more testing tonight (and then I will be out of town for 4-5 days so bear with me for a brief lack of updates coming up).
I haven't done any additional flushes after the first 3 limited "closed system" type approach. Was really wanting to gauge the improvement after each flush but with no real initial change (maybe not enough flushing yet) I think I will try the open drain approach the next go around and see if I can get to a fairly clear state.
Good point about the water being in the oil pan and not showing up elsewhere in the oil system. I have been checking the oil level periodically throughout this process and after the first pull of the filter to remove the cooler it got it to the top of the full mark. After changing the cooler and doing the first 3 flushes it looks like it is halfway between the min and max. I am not sure I have enough data points to determine if the level is going up/down or staying the same (maybe it only loses oil when running and gains water when cooling from high temps?).
