Changing Thermostat

theoretically the coolant will start circulating @ a lower temp than stock amounting to overall lower engine temps, I wouldn’t bother w/ it personally on a DD truck, & I also feel like you would be able to accomplish the same thing w/ a tune, or maybe they can only control when rad fans come on....but the other thing I’d mention is I seem to remember members having issues w/ the SPD Tstat not fitting flush to the tank like OEM or not having as secure a fit & leaking or blowing out

should probably research that a bit....or not waste $$$ on one

The issue with the SPD thermostat was related to the supplied gasket not creating that OEM seal. When I replaced mine, I just ordered a spare gasket from the local Ford Parts store (Thermostat gasket: HL3Z-8255-A) and used that based on the recommendation that you shouldn't reuse the original. To be honest, the original didn't look like it had that much wear and I was at 26K miles.

The thermostat controls the temperature of the engine. You could add a very large fan and radiator... the temperature will not change if you don't change the tstat (under normal operating conditions... not towing a 8000# trailer up a mountain... then yes, the larger rad and fan will help). If you try to cool more with a fan, the thermostat will close and bring the temperature up (again, normal operating) If you want a lower engine temp, change the tstat to a lower value. Not commenting on benefit.

Just adding to an older discussion here in case others may be researching as well. Confirmed on my Gen 2 that the Thermostat is definitely 61 MM and 195 degrees. Added a photo for reference.

I just replaced mine yesterday with a 180 degree thermostat as it is now tuned and has Water/Methanol and other mods. Seems to be running cooler also! I did not go to the 170 degree as I live further north.

Who did you source the 180 from?

Hi...

I found mine at a local parts store. Motorad is an OE type supplier and the part # was/is 655-180. Nothing special and pretty inexpensive (like any other Themrostat). It fit perfectly and works as designed.

I'll be adding a Mishimoto Radiator and 180 thermostat soon. Will report back results but think the radiator alone will be the biggest improvement.

We do these thermostats on a lot of racecars, especially with fan deletes. Don't see why it wouldn't help here

The truck doesn't need a radiator, it obviously doesn't hurt but not necessary. The thermostat is what makes the biggest difference.
