Well, I just joined the club! 2017, 62k miles. I’ve heard this noise for the last year or so, but didn’t take it in. And I had heard of this issue. I actually took the truck in for the transmission holding 3rd for too long sometimes. On the test drive it made that awkward clunk I read about. And it’s done that for a while as well. I think me not addressing those two issues was the old “boiling the frog” analogy. The mechanic said, “That’s all I need” and we cut the test drive short. Fast forward- Not sure, yet, what they have done exactly, but they had to pull the trans and dive into it. And then I get the call that they heard the noise on startup. Cam phasers. So, I’m waiting for updates. The GREAT news? I bought a Ford 6yr 150k mile warranty with $100 deductible and loaner car. They gave me a $63k Expedition with 7 miles on it for a loaner. So...I’m being treated well. But THANK GOODNESS for the warranty. It was $2,200, and they had already done $800 in sunroof repairs to date. I’m guessing the trans and phaser repairs could get close to $4k-$5k? Guess being happy about spending $2200 is a sign of the times. Haha! Here’s my concern- will it do it again? I had planned on keeping this truck for at least 10 years. It’s the first vehicle I’ve owned that I haven’t grown tired of. I’m now second guessing keeping it once the warranty gets close to expiring. Maybe I sell it right before. Also gives a new shopper peace of mind, as anything they discover will be covered.

This is great news! Thank you for taking the time to educate me on this.The phaser service part numbers were updated in 2019 to eliminate the issue from reoccurring. So once it’s repaired you should have nothing to worry about.
Once the trans is repaired that should be fine too; it most likely has a sticking valve in the main control, which may have damaged some of the clutches. This was an issue on some early models; 2017 was the first year for the 10R.
