Went out to California City with @MustangAndRaptor and his new 2014 Terrain. My first time out there.

Pardon my ignorance but i've seen it a few times now but why do people seem to fold their mirrors in offroad? I assume maybe the front wheels kick up some rocks and maybe chip the underside of the mirror?

Like you assume. To protect the mirrors. Mostly from cutting the corners to tight and hitting them on trees or bushes.

Not completely sure why you'd have to do this in the desert. It looks wide open.

Yep, the idea is to avoid scratches on the mirrors from bushes. There were a few trails where it got a bit tight for the Raptor.
