i've had my AFE stage 2 for over 3 years now with no issues at all. the cover isn't necessary. ive ran through mud and water and never had any get into the box and my rubber connecter boots are perfectly fine no cracking or dry rotting so maybe you just got a bad set i don't know. it doesn't require a tune to run it and without the tune it even helped the truck breathe a lot better

Yeah I don't quite understand the cover. If it was below the filter it would make more sense to me because it would prevent water from coming up through the engine bay to the filter. But having it on top sounds like it's just for aesthetics.. Idk maybe I'm retarded.

I'd say go with UMP or Volant with the powercore filter. Those two are probably the best for keeping dirt out of the engine.

I don't think I recall reading about your issues with this. What was wrong?

I didn't have any fitment issues at all. I cannot contest to the quality yet. It seems like a good product but The Snoball will be a good test.

I have posted about it a couple of times, but since you asked.
It fit loose where it connects to the stock box and only uses 2 of the three clamps which are loose and floppy.
The tube is made out of 2 pieces of tubing and the welds are rough on the inside.
I have had two of them, the second one was supposed to be the updated version, but did not correct any fitment isues, only difference I noticed is that it had long ass screws attaching the AFE emblem instead of rivets.
When I installed it I had an annoying buzzing noise in the cabin at low RPM's in first gear.
I have read about owners having other problems such as the elbow splitting, the black finish peeling off, rust and lots of dirt getting past the filter.

The new CAI that I decided to go with, the quality is night and day difference. It fits properly (not loose) and uses all three of the clamps on the factory box to hold it in place. All hoses and fittings are thick reinforced silicone, the worm clamps are much higher quality, the tube is a smooth one piece, the filter is Nanofiber made by Donaldson. And system is tuned to work with OEM tune.

don't think you need a lid. here is a pic of buddy's truck after a good run and the only reason the intake lid is cleaner is cause he took it of to clean out the intake after taking in some water. i would go with the lid just for that one whole shit moment.

And if you get a kit that has the filter made out of Nanofiber use a hydroshield sock because they swell up like a sponge if they get wet.

No to hijack the thread but I have been very impressed with the Volant unit. Had one on my Ram and it was flawless. You folks think much of them for the Raptor?

They are liked by some but have also read a lot of complaints about fitment or installation difficulties.

No issues here with AFE stage 2 with lid. Went on in half an hour and no fitment issues. Maybe I have a newer version but it's on solid and hasn't moved any. I would not recommend this CAI without getting the 5 star tune as well. That probably goes for any of the CAI kits that remove the stock upper intake resonator as you'll get that really annoying resonance everytime you take off in first. 5 star calibrates the tune for the length of the intake tube. I got the lid because it looks good and quiets the intake down just a hair. Without it the sound easily overwhelmed the stock exhaust.

The volant is a great CAI, the problems that some of us had, were due to getteing older stock/set-up's that venders had before the correction on the bracket, I took alot of picture's and measurements, and chris-(freedommotorsports) did the leg work with contacting volant, and the turn out was venders were still sending out older stock before the correction, volant will send you the correct/revamped bracket as long as you don't alter the one you have.
