Left for long road tip this morning during heavy rain storm going on vacation in northern Ontario lakes region- so I had a kayak in the bed w/ tailgate up so I could keep stuff secure & use backup camera w/ the jet ski getting towed behind. Used a tarp tucked down between bed/cab & held snugly in place by 6-8 bungee cords or general tie down rope. Any bungees that came in contact w/ the body were either plastic or rubber coated steel & on top of that I wrapped them in electrical tape to be extra careful-I have used this method on other trucks without issue.

It was down pouring & @ some point the back of the tarp where it was wrapped around kayak became loose & was flapping- actually the new “heavy duty” tarp had one of the rings torn through & a cord let go creating enough slack for all the ropes to rub/shift a bit.

Now, I’m not surprised there’d be some damage given what happened, but this is extreme IMO & def makes me question the use of AL in trucks as well as Fords paint quality.

So take a look @ pics any suggestion on how to go about fixing w/o getting into ins. Claim or busting the bank I’d appreciate.

The bumper/fender flare are probably fairly easy fixes- imagine fender flare is a couple hundred bucks & I bet I could get my bumper sprayed for few hundred too. The bedside? Wtf- all one piece & the bungee cord hook literally burnt through the clear/paint/primer & etched a noticeable amount of material away- this is after maybe 3-400 miles tops, if I kept driving the whole way without checking it I’d probably have a pinky sized hole- no joke.

Fender flare damage was nylon/cotton blend rubbing- ya kidding me? Wore down sections in it-Cheap. If it can’t handle a bungee cord rubbing hows it hold up against brush!?!?

Bumper damage also solely from cord/rope rubbing

Bedside damage only part caused by actual hook.

All the contractors out there buying AL body work trucks - especially the HD ones that’ll be putting in real work, they’re going to be in for some real issues. I don’t see how it’s possible for an actual work truck to stand up...these AL beds are def not gonna last if you actually use em as intended- maybe why GM offers carbon fiber now???

Sucks overall.

Diamondback solves this.

Linex fender flares.
What’s diamondback?

Linex fender flares not a bad idea, but cost to do so would be more than cost to just replace 1 OEM rear- I read on forum someplace a guy replaced a front one for $240 the rears gotta be a bit cheaper w/o a light.

I’m doing the rear bumper in linex regardless. That paints thin as tissue paper & not sure but it may be steel not AL.

The bed side tho? Ouch. I’m sure both sides of the bed have a fair share of clear coat scratches too. Will buff & wax after vacation get a better look @ what’s going on, but that dent/burn is no joke. Texted pic to my body shop buddy see what he thinks....probably dreading having to work w/ aluminum lol!

I've had a terrible experience with two different - both highly rated - body shops I used to repaint. It was expensive, and neither job was up to my QC standards (and the second one wasn't even passable at that).

If you decide to to go with a body shop, make sure you inspect their work prior to using them. Most can't match shadow black, to say nothing of orange peel. That said, it is the bed, so it should be a pretty easy blend job. Could do it yourself if you take the time to learn it - not that hard to shoot out a of can and get body shop quality results, provided you prep properly.

The dealer should be able to order a flare for you for around $240.

Man... I really feel bad for you here. We’ve all been there, I’m no exception - I’ve come to regret a few of my escapades after the fact, but I got to give it to you: You seriously went BIG.

check here or Fleabay for fender flares. the bumper? well... ADD has some cool stuff, just sayin’. The paint worn through? Man that hurts just looking at the pic. damn.

+1 @rtmozingo

look for a body shop that does custom work. No, you’re not looking for custom work but these guys take on 6 figure projects, restores, rest-o-mods, and will happily share pics or work in project inspections. I had a custom shop repair a Mustang from a deer strike. he calls me, says ‘this hood isn’t going to make it, it’s not a Ford part’ We chatted, he says ‘I’m going to paint it up and do my best, will let you know’ he does, no charge to me, called back ‘hey, I don’t like the way this hood looks, can you come inspect?’ I did and if he hadn’t pointed out the flaws, I’d have probably missed several. they were all really, really small. the hood wouldn’t properly align - he had to show me with a micrometer because to the naked eye, it was fine. He said: I would push insurance for the Ford part. I did, got it back and it was perfect.

I’m sure there are other good body shops out there, just look for shops willing to share their work by pictures, work in progress, etc.

Moral of the story: Don’t brink a kayak with you on vacation. it didn’t work out well for the guys from Deliverance, or you.

enjoy the trip the best you can, it’s happened, you can’t undo it. Focus on enjoying the vacation and getting some quality repairs when you return.

Good luck on the repairs

Man that hurts just to look at it. Hope you can enjoy your vacation. I wouldn’t worry about it at this point, accidents happen and the damage is done. Most body shops now have a lifetime warranty on their repairs. They’ll fix it up good as new and you’ll be back to Enjoying your Raptor!

The plastic on these things scratch just by looking at it. I’m OCD about how I treat mine and my bed rails and tailgate have scratches everywhere. Same as the interior panels.

Wish you well getting it fixed up!!!

If that's shadow black, find a body shop that uses ppg waterborne basecoat. It's a perfect match for ford G1.
