This brings back bad memories...
I had a close call with a boat propeller and almost had this same situation.
A boat was in front of me in traffic when I noticed a strong smell of diesel fuel. I found out later a tanker truck was spilling fuel all over the road. It was also lightly raining that day, so the road was super slick and my tires were almost bald.
The traffic light turned red ahead of us and I pushed on the brakes. Nothing happened; my tires had stopped, but I was sliding on the wet pavement. At the last second, I swerved to the left lane, (thank you anti-lock brakes), and finally stopped just ahead of the truck pulling the boat.
I had new tires within a couple of hours...lesson learned.
