That may work, but I really don't want to pay apple more/again to listen to my music, and doesn't the streaming use data? The apple/sync issues go way back, and make no sense.

I hear you, it is kind of a double edged sword. Most of my music came from ripping CDs in the old days before Apple Music existed. Yes, streaming will use data, but not anymore than something like Pandora or Spotify. I use around 3GB/month and that is constantly running Waze and Pandora/Apple Music. I can justify the cost myself because it allows me to buy a smaller iPhone saving me hundreds and I always have my whole collection even on business trips in the hotels and such. The downside is that you only have downloaded stuff on the airplanes, but the upside is you can download any portion of your music you want.

My collection is a lot like yours. I just got a new iPhone 12 that will hold almost everything, but I haven't moved it all over yet. I think I will try that via BT or CarPlay to see how it does. I still take my iPod Classic on planes, etc. I realize I am fighting the trend in still using physical media, but the Sync issues with Apple go way back. As I've said in the past, my wife's old Mercedes had a much simpler interface, as did my old Tundra.

Some BT technology has caught up, but some still compresses the audio. In my 2018 audio quality is significantly better using the USB cable for audio over CarPlay.

I generally agree, and that's why I used my IPod Classic for so long, despite the issues...I can use the eq on it in addition to the truck's eq to get the best sound of any source I've tried in my 2018. If we had an AUX cable instead of USB, I'd use that with the iPod, but we don't. Going to try the new iPhone over CarPlay for bulk of music once I load it up and see how it goes.

Never had an issue with my 2013 FX4. Started out great with the 2019 Raptor, but suddenly when I asked for playlist country, I got a completely different list. I can ask for artists, or songs. Need to update the sync, and reset the iPods. Thanks for the help.
