I love the original Bedrug and hate the current version, so I'm going to attempt my own. Here's the plan: Interlocking foam exercise flooring from Costco. About 3/4" thick. $30 for a 4'x6' area. I bought two because I want to go all the way to the edges of the bed. I used to extra to augment the flooring in my exercise area. When I take the edging off and trim off the tabs, it fits perfectly length-wise with three sections. I'm heading over to Home Depot today to pick up a 6'x8' section of outdoor carpet and a tube of marine adhesive, 3M 5200. About $45 for both. I'm going to bond the carpet to the foam. It will approximate the original Bedrug if it works. I plan to let the extra carpet run up the sides of the bed a bit to protect the paint and I will let a flap cross the tailgate gap and lay on the tailgate. If I don't like how that works, I'll trim it off. Tailgate carpet is a mixed blessing and the plastic work surface on the gate looks to be pretty good for camping. I may leave a few inches to help block dust entry and cut the rest off. Wish me luck. :)

Good luck with that and post a few pictures when you get your project complete

I have the interlocking foam squares in my Gen 1. Do not like it, but for as much as I use the bed, it will do. The black side of the square seemed to disintegrate and get on everything that touched the foam. Eventually I will get something better.

Interesting. It looked a bit flimsy and I figured it would get torn up with normal use. That's why I'm adding the carpet. That, along with the tonneau to keep the sun off, and I'm hopeful. If it disintegrates I can always drop $100 on a plain jane rubber mat. That wasn't a great option today because I hope, weather permitting, to be in Utah next week and I would have to wait for shipping.

I have a tonneau cover, now have the colored side up to stop the transfer. It has lasted for around 5 years, not bad for 15 bucks when I bought them.

Got 'er done. Here's how it went.

Cut and fit foam.

Cut and glue front of pad. Add flat square weight.

Work my way back, cutting and gluing.

A little extra glue near the back edge.

Weighted up. I decided not to mess with carpet over the tailgate. It was going to be annoying, so I trimmed it flush. The pad fits pretty tight to the top surface of the gate, so dust intrusion will be slowed. I threw a bunch of random flat somewhat heavy items on because the glue takes 72 hours to cure. At room temperature, so maybe double that given our lowish temps. I'm going to leave it like this until I have to pack for my trip. Then we'll see.

And ... damn. I was going to get a photo showing my feet but I forgot. Sorry, Smurf. :)
