Are the new LED headlights bad? IIHS says so.

They probably don't have the North American requirement for orange side reflectors at the front of the vehicle.

Euro cars don't require them either, most Euro spec cars use clear ones.

Edit: Are they using projectors and HIDS?

HID are superior lights. Manufacturers are only going with LED since they are now cheaper and they can be molded into many light shapes for design and space restriction. LED in theory should last a really long time, but most of them are pretty cheaply made with poor QC so you can get random burn outs within months of new.

BMW for instance tries to sell their LED as an option over standard HID, and people buy that hook, line, and sinker as some sort of performance gain. The stock HID are actually better. Ditto Porsche.

Lights aside, have a look at the consumers report on trucks that was recently released...whew, bottom barrel - dodge, fiat, chrysler, ram. Ford rated "reliable, but behind chevy and gmc some how. IF I was to break down in a Ford at least I will look good on the road-side.

they're a pain in the ass at night for oncoming traffic. at least that's been my experience. Not sure on output as I'm always being blinded by them instead of using them.

I, for one, am glad the IIHS is testing headlights now. If I recall correctly, I think good headlights are soon going to be required for vehicles to earn the Top Safety Pick Plus rating. Maybe our government will fix our outdated regulations that don't allow all the nifty kind of headlights that Europe has, such as the laser ones companies like BMW sell there.
