Under hard acceleration between 4 - 4.5 thousand rpms the steering gets really difficult !

It used to get better right after the rpms dropped, but today the steering was near impossible for about 10 minutes.

All of the problems I've been able to find refer to issues at low rpms.

Power steering issues at speed, and high rpms seems *** backwards to power steering pump issues I've seen in the past.

Check your fluid level, bleed the system, make sure the seal on the reservoir cap is still good. This sounds like a fluid starvation issue. Can you better describe the scenario? Is this off-roading in low range or something?

Happens during normal blacktop driving. Entrance ramp to interstate, or passing on a 2-lane road when getting the rpms up around 4.5 - 5 grand.

Had new power steering lines put on it about 6 months ago because one was leaking and thought that might be causing it. That didn't help, and it continues to get worse.

Well, that has to be frustrating as HELLo, when you look in the reservoir is it foaming? Something must be overheating, idk, weird.

Do you have any leaks at the rack? Get under there with a flashlight. If you aren't sure: clean it well, go for a drive where the symptom happens, then check the rack. Could be the bypass valve in the PS pump failing, could be the internal seals in the rack.

You shouldn't even feel a lack of power steering at those speeds which makes me think rack.

UPDATE:
So we found lots of metal (metallic particles) in the power steering fluid and reservoir.
With just shy of 140k miles we decided to replace the whole system. New rack, pump, lines, everything ......

Also put new sway bar bushings on ...
