I don't get it.

It's not an issue that breaks trucks down. It's an annoyance that is simply replaced with different parts.

It doesn't mean the truck is shit and it happens on a fraction of the F150's. Far less than it seems
on here.

techs have also repeatedly said that there is nothing preventative that can stop it. just a bad design.

sure looks like there is some super bad info going around this forum about what can be done to "prevent" this.

My 2018 Lariat did it even after a replacement, and that (among other things) got me to trade it in on a 2018 Raptor. The Raptor JUST started having the rattle. It isn't close to as bad as the last one.

The dealer claims that nothing bad will happen with it. I have an extended warranty, stick with tight OCI from Ford dealerships, and have been keeping a paper trail just in case. If it's just a noise, I can't see letting a tech tear into your engine and possibly causing more issues than you started with.

My view, I bought a $70k truck, it shouldn't rattle on cold starts as time goes on, nothing bad happened w mine aside from the annoyance of the sound.

Like I said, I expect more when paying more, if it happens again I will not be happy.

Dropped my 2018 raptor off at the shop three weeks ago now. When talking with the service guy, he told me I need a new cam shaft. Said nothing about phasers. When I questioned him about just replacing the shaft only, he said that’s what ford recommends. How does the cam shaft only go bad?

that’s where I’m at. 45000 miles and truck has run perfect. Has always made noise at cold start up but do I let a tech rip open the engine for it???

love this thread.

don't care how much was payed. it's a Ford.

That translates to overpriced working mans blue collar chariot.

Probably a better chance of monkeys flying out of my ass than there not being any issues with
this thing.

I accept it and move on. Or I'll sell it.

dude had them replaced 3 times. WOW. when is the lesson learned?

Well, in my defense I have only replaced them once. Third set means:
1. Original equipment
2. Previous owner replaced once
3. I just replaced

That’s 3 sets. Original owner replaced in 2018 with “like” parts. I replaced with upgraded parts.

it’s a truck, Not a career choice.

Interesting thread (one of several about cam phasers). Needless to say I was disappointed a year ago when I heard the rattle. A couple months after purchase of my 2018 w/27k mi. Two different dealers either “...we aren’t saying it’s not happening but we didn’t hear it...” or “...some upper engine noise is normal is these.” After reading through here I decided to live with it. Annoying but if it doesn’t impact performance not a big deal. 47k mi now and on cold starts maybe 1/10 starts it sounds like an 80’s diesel cold start for ~2sec. All the others and it does rattle a little but lightly. It also has a very light rattle on warm starts...

I wonder how many will change their tune when "no problem" turns into no sale when its time to move on to another vehicle?

If you are okay with rattling parts, its your truck and your money. You do you. Im not okay with it and will keep going back until it's right.

Yes, I understand problems will happen. The warranty is there to correct those problems.

I understand that mindset. You would assume that internal engine rattling is not good for wear, especially considering the vulnerability of a cold engine.

I probably would change my tune in that instance, but I always trade mine in to a Ford dealer...and they are the ones claiming (on post-inspection reports) that it is normal and non-destructive. I guess private sales is a little different though.

They'll claim it is normal until they decide it is not normal. I can easily see dealers low-balling due to the rattle. "Well, it might be the cam phasers but it could also be something more serious. Best I can do is tree fiddy."

If you have the warranty, why not have it fixed? I understand the concern about cracking open an engine but if it breaks, they get to fix it.

At this point I will probably run it until the 8/125 warranty is up and then mod the hell out of the truck. I figure by then the price of parts should be low enough to not be a major problem.
