GEN 1 About to spend 1500 on rebuilt shocks, need advice.

Rock auto didn’t have the shocks in stock so I really needed to get them replaced so I dropped $2886 on new ones from the Stealership. Sometimes you have to pay to play. Did them with the help of a buddy, had to buy a socket and bigger torque wrench. It’s not that difficult. Big plus is now I can have the old ones rebuilt for rotation for when these need rebuild. 1A09ECB0-CEAF-4E02-8BBB-950F189D4C0A.jpeg

I have decided to attempt to go through Rock Auto. If they have them. But now I am thinking I should replace the Leafs also. So I have to figure this out now.

I bought new ones off of rock auto, around $1400. Backs are easy, let the dealership do the fronts for $250ish (2.5 hrs labor). Have heard mixed reviews of rebuilds, fair number of people report leaks.

I can spin a wrench but the front shock bolt is 425ft/lb at spec, you'll need air tools if you diy. One of the other bolts needs a vice grip to hold as well which can be a pita.

I considered buying new, but I went the rebuild route. My thinking was I could refill the nitrogen if needed with the addition of the schrader valve, as well as have the seals upgraded.

Would hate to buy new and have the same leaking as I do with the current stock ones. At least with a rebuild I am attempting to upgrade a little without going full crazy on 3’s or King/Icon.

I started the rebuild process at one of the more reputable rebuild vendors, and by the time I checked all the appropriate boxes, I had damn near been nickel and dimed to the price of buying new.

The buy new option isn’t considered nearly enough IMO. Rebuilds are a mixed bag, and even a perfect rebuild will not be the same as new OEM, both in ride and durability. And with a new piece, you get a brand new finish on the body and the guarantee of a factory fresh ride. That’s what made sense to me.

Thank you 98ramgerdave, I plain to rebuild the old set myself, but Ill keep in the Forged-offroad in mind.

You cannot hit torque specs using hand held air tools. You need a torque wrench that is good to 425 ftlbs, or, a standard torque wrench and a torque multiplier.

I've read too many issues about rebuilds- I'm buying new when the time comes.
