I don't know if not putting any kind of lube is a good idea.

Keep us posted!

I put the drive shaft back in just as it was and drove the truck about 30 miles. I did get on it a couple of times and made some sharp turns, I DID NOT feel any CLUNK! Now time will really tell but if this works I let my friend know about this issue and he said he would be more then happy to do this for everyone!

It only cost me $80 so not bad if it does fix the problem!!

I hear you.
One thing though, making turns will not produce the driveshaft clunk.
It's coming to a stop and taking off that the binding occurs.

I was going to ask you if that was a OEM yoke but you answered my question.
If you have the original yoke you will see that splines do not go all the way down to the bottom, it's a 1 1/2 to 2" void. This also helps with binding.

I hope it all works out for you.

I did stop and go as I had to run to town, but if it doesn't do it tomorrow when I leave work (it always does) I think I'm headed in the right direction.

I also found this about micro slick vs nickel

Micro Slick out-performs its competitors, such as Nickel Boron (NiB-X), Fail Zero, NP3, Titanium Nitride, etc. Because of this, Micro Slick is not only used on firearms, it is used on high performance vehicles as well, including vehicles in NASCAR.

Yeah, we thought the same thing with the hi strength chromoly yoke but after two weeks of driving the clunk started. Going back to the stock yoke solved clunk issue.
And I personally like the vibration damper anyway for my high driving when I can.

I'm interested to see how it works out, it's a lot cheaper that buying a new OEM one that's for sure.

Replaced

Had my shaft replaced at my local dealership under warranty following removal and inspection. Tech found that the original coating on the shaft was worn and splines had some damage/scaring. Been 500 miles since replacement. Guess we'll see how long this one lasts.

After doing everything I could think of to stop this, I finally just figured it was a thing i was gonna have to live with. I put a bunch of Moly grease in it through my zerk fitting and over time it's actually gotten much better. Think its wearing those moly particles into the splines. May be worth trying over a PTFE grease.

So, I've put in a couple more shifts at work and a few thousand more km on the new driveshaft and still clunk-free. I am happy it is gone, will update in a month or so.

@Fivenines I'm glad you haven't had any issues, I know that I've put 1000+ miles on my truck maybe more and have still had NO CLUNK! I am wanting to pull the drive shaft out and check and see how the microslick is wearing
