My tapping is constant when revving and only heard inside the truck. Ford said it wasn't normal and wanted to open up the motor. My 2011 didn't do it, nor did a new 2014 on the lot, nor did one of the mech's raptor. We decided to wait to open up the motor. To be clear, this isn't the tapping sound in the engine bay or tapping on start up. This heard within the cab. I've put 1000 miles on it since we decided not to work on it to see if it works itself out. The one thought about about the plastic valve covers seems to make sense in that the vibration from those may be reverberating to the cab. I was thinking about putting a sound dampener on them to see if that helps.

Where did you rub the sea foam through? Just with fuel or vacuum source into the intake?

Just to add, mine doesn't do this when cold. Only when warmed up.

The timing chain assembly has a hydraulic tensioner. Effectively, it's vaguely similar to a hydraulic lifter.

Sometime it takes a few seconds to 'pump up' and can cause a 'knocking' like sound.

Injector ticking is a very soft "high" clitter at a rapid pace. Not so much an actual knock.

The tensioner noise most closely resembles upper valvetrain noise or piston slap.

Old/high mileage oil, excessively heavy/thick oil, and/or an older or malfunctioning oil filter that was previously mentioned can all factor in as well.

This is the most likely cause of the tick tick that goes away after a few seconds. The tensioner needs oil pressure to be "pumped up" and it takes a couple revolutions of the engine to have the oil pump actually pump any pressure. Even with a Ford filter with anti-drainback, the "at rest" oil pressure still needs a couple seconds to get a shove from the pump.

The sound I hear is normal, and mine only occurs on cold start up (first thing in am, and not usual again after it has run)

Yep, my truck definitely has the "tick-tick-tick" on startup for about half a second to a second and then it goes away. No other noises and it only does it after I've been driving the truck to/from work and I start it up once it's cooled down a little bit, but not completely cold.

Good to know it's not something I have to worry about. It's a teeth-clenching sound but I guess we all have it so there's not much to do about it.

Mine also does this. the mechanic at the local ford dealership said it was normal and not to be concerned. Of course its not his motor making the noise. The noise goes away imediately but still makes you nervouse.

Valve noise on startup

Hi Guys,

When I start my truck, I get some pretty obvious valve noise that tapers off over the first ~3 seconds of running. Then right around the 5 second mark (usually) a loud-ish click/thud of something engaging.

I'm running Mobile 1 5/20 full synthetic, is anyone else having this?

Thanks!
