It's all bull..I bought a tuner with tunes in it. SCT with five star, and thought hell I just try first before buying new tunes. Worked like a champ! I have never bought any tunes and my works fine. :893karatesmiley-thu and yes it was used.

same here... I bought a used one, pluged it in, and worked fine.

Honestly, the way I look at it. This is just my own personal opinion and experience. I would not risk a 50k truck to save $250.00 on a used piece of sophisticated equipment that could do irreparable damage to the electronics.

I much prefer buying new, from a trusted vendor with support. Too much risk for such little reward.

Damn... so many conflicting stories. Not that anyone is wrong.

Obviously a tune manufacture would want to sell new tunes, but what is the right answer??

Yukon Joe
Buffalo Run Support Raptor
RPG and WSI present The South Dakota Buffalo Run - FORD RAPTOR FORUM - Ford SVT Raptor Forums - Ford Raptor

That was my frustration. Couldn't get a technical explination of "WHY" it wouldn't work. All I heard was "different stratigies" for different trucks, but why would Ford write different strategies for every Raptor on the road? They wouldn't so this didn't make sense to me.. I could see maybe improving or tweaking it a bit for new models so a 13 could be set up a little different than say a 10 or 11.

And then I thought maybe the companies selling these tunes codes it so that it's specific to your vin# only so if you tried to load a custom tune that was written for another vehicle it would display "vehicle not matched" or something like that.. this actually happened to me last week while switching between different tunes so I reset it to stock then re-loaded it and it worked.

Im not saying to try it because I might have just gotten lucky and could have ended up having to buy a new ECU. There are probably others that have tried it and didn't get so lucky, but since we are on the topic, I just wanted to discuss and share my experience so maybe we can all learn something.

And I agree with you Alvin, it's not wise to gamble on something like that when the risk to reward ratio is so small, I think I was just in one of those IDGAF moods that day.. lol

well maybe someone from one of the tuner company's will chime in and give us all a logical explanation as to why we need to buy different tunes.....so the rest can make an informed decision as to witch way works best for them..sure back in the non-EFI days you would have to adjust for temp and altitude, ect. But now with O2, MAP, MAF, ect censors, fuel and timing are all self adjusting.
These aftermarket programers are just piggy back systems to the ECU, yes i do understand that there is also shift patterns and ect, but that should have no effect on going from one raptor to another. I totally understand if you were going from a raptor to something else then yes the program would have to change. my point is if they are telling us that it has to change because of it being tuned to where you live, then I say ********, its just a piggy back and the factory ECU will automatically adjust for location. :sunot:

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, AND I AM NOT THROWING STONES HERE. I AM PERFECTLY HAPPY WITH MY USED SCT TUNER WITH FIVE STAR TUNES. ARE THERE ANY TUNER COMPANY'S THAT CARE TO CHIME IN ON THIS?

sorry about hijacking your thread..

PS. My tuner is only allowed 5 unlocks so keep that in mind if buying a used one.
