Curious if anyone has seen something like this before. I am looking for opinions / advice. I purchased a used 2020 Ford Raptor with 14,000 miles on it from a dealership about 6mnth ago.
First time in the desert the tire and rim exploded on a relatively flat trail with some smaller whoops (approx. speed of break 40-50). I did not feel like I was doing anything more than you see on a Ford Motor company video promoting the Raptor. The tire and rim explosion caused my truck to dart off the side of the trail/road into bushes. Truck has some front end damage. Curtain airbags deployed. Front Airbags did not deploy. Manufacturer issue? Dealer who I purchased it from issue? Insurance Issue? My issue? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you!IMG-6284.jpgdeploy.

thats one catastrophic wheel failure, it sucks but at least you're ok?

With an airbag deployment, it would probably ideal to go through your insurance, unless you want to foot that bill yourself. Not sure how this would mess with your premiums, and if you're going to be rated at fault for an accident such as this. Determinining the cause of the failure might save you some grief in the long run and hopefully not make you at fault. Which is why I'm assuming you are asking in this thread.

This also highlights the benefit of a forged wheel over a cast one.

What tire pressure were you running? You were getting air borne a bit I would assume. The only way to tell if it wasn't your trip this time, is to look closely at the rim and see if there are old dirt marks or rust around where it separated. That isn't common but it can happen if you land pretty hard on one wheel. Which corner is that?

I was running at about 20psi.
I did catch a little air when I pushed off the side of the traill/road. Couple of bush / sand mounds along the way.
I will examine the a little closer to see if there is any rust marks.
I cannot believe a rim could rip off like a damn pepsi can under these conditions. Been off-roading for a lot of years and never seen anything like this.
This is the rear passenger side tire / wheel.

We were perfectly fine. Things just got a little bumpy when I pushed off the road/trail. I did file a claim with insurance. I am definitely going push any say I was not my fault. We will see how far it goes.
Agree 100%, forged wheels would definitely benefit. Probably put some Method Race Wheels on it. If my wife doesn't kill me. Haha!
Thanks!

The wheels should be an easy sell, cause its not just about looks, its about safety!

Is that an OEM wheel? Anyway, this is one reason why people run forged wheels - cast wheels can have imperfections in casting making the wheel weak in spots. Probably what happened here. Sorry man, this sucks.

Yes, OEM wheel. Truck has about 18,000 miles on it. I have put 4,000 on it.
Really the first time in the dirt since I have owned it.
