F150/Navigator/Expedition are all that are left using this 3.5 ecoboost. This engine is being phased out. The other vehicles are either all cancelled or got a different engine.

Yes, the vehicles were canceled, not the engines, except for the Explorer, which did change motors.

Also, the Flex still has the 3.5 Ecoboost as an option and the Flex can still be ordered today, but yes, the Flex will be going away by 2020. And I think that is what is happening, it is not so much the motor is going away, but rather the platforms that have had it are going away.

Of the 3 EB motors introduced in 2010 two of them are still in use, and one is gone. Of course all three of them will be gone one day. But the fact that there are 2 generations of the 3.5 EB seems to indicate Ford likes the size.

It does not matter to me, I am not a huge fan of the V-6 at all. Yes, I like the one in my Raptor, but the wife has already told me, in the slim chance that Ford puts a V-8 in a Raptor again, and assuming it is not $100k+, she will buy one. She is the one who picked out our current Raptor anyway.

Actually, it’s the other way around. Ford is winding down their car manufacturing and will only build trucks, suvs and the Mustang in the future (by 2022). All of which will have the 3.5 in it.

Just f150/navigator/expedition. The 3.0 tt is replacing this.

Fair enough. But given these are the “volume leaders” for Ford, I still fail to see how this is winding down.

It really comes down to very simple business concepts: economics (what people are buying) and regulations (what can they build - CAFE standards). Big V8s are dying/dead. Turbo cars are efficient and create excitement. We’re lucky there aren’t electric Raptors yet.

So instead of all of the wasted effort of threads lamenting the loss of the slower, heavier, less efficient but better sounding V8, we should be posting threads about how excited we are there isn’t a hybrid or full electric on the horizon

I think reliability is the key, not anything else. After my 19's failed phasers (twice) and buyback, I won't be running to get another ecoboost. I read here of the many others with same issue (all years) and was shocked that this has been a problem for nearly a decade. I really should have done more research before I bought this.

While I get your reticence on the 3.5, the problem isn’t really that widespread or there would be a forced recall on it. I’ve owned 3 3.5EB Raptors, none of them had this issue. My ‘19 runs flawlessly (only 5k miles) and is tuned. I love it, aside from the aggravating TCM tune that Ford put on it.

The phasers seem to be a chronic problem, agreed. But nothing is free of mechanical failure.

I had the 6.2 GMC Sierra Denali bought back. I had 2 engine failures in a BMW X5M (first gen). Complicated mechanical things break, but I don’t think it’s a terrible design flaw in the 3.5

I had 5.0 Coyote in an F150 with a Whipple supercharger on it. Great truck, ran like a scalded dog. But it’s a dying breed in today’s world.

However, if you had issues with yours and it makes you not want to invest in the brand, then you’re doing the right thing - vote with your hard earned cash. The beauty of the free market.
