Alright so Ford tells me all 3 of these have been done:

21B10
21N03
21N08

09/2021: PCM reprogrammed (mileage unknown).
01/2022: CAM phasers replaced (28k)
5/2022: exhaust cam phasers failed and timing chain tensioner broke or fell apart (30k).
01/2024: knock at idle after warmed up (41k)

So everything has been done to this truck yet I still have that knock so I assume the issue persists or it wasn’t fixed right in the first place? Hence the failing on the exhaust side? I got an appointment at their Ford dealership on Monday so will see what if anything Ford or the dealership is going to do about it.

So, it was reprogrammed(21B10), the cam phasers done(21N03), then must have had shutter and put back to original programming. (21N08).

I dont think ive seen a truck actually stay on the 21B10 software out of all my friends that have these trucks. Sample size about 10.

Not to mention exhaust cam phasers failed as well. So pretty much through the gauntlet of cam phaser issues?

Needing 21N08 indicates that the engine was run low on oil during at least one point in its life. The low oil level causes cam journal bearing wear, which results in oil bleeding off before reaching the phasers. Inadequate oil pressure/volume will cause the phasers to knock at idle since they can’t maintain position.

21B10 increases cam phasers duty cycle, which requires oil feed to the phasers to be within spec. When the oil feed is inadequate, the phasers can’t maintain timing, which is experienced as a “shudder” concern. The only way to resolve that issue is to replace the cylinder heads.

Thats interesting because just about everyone I know with this motor had shutter after the reprogram and had to go back. My buddy at Ford Performance said don't even bother with it if you get the new hardware. Also what is considered low?

Sounds like your friends needs to check their oil level once in a while! You can’t measure oil pressure reaching the phasers; the issue is diagnosed by inspecting the cam journals for excessive wear/scoring. New phasers won’t fix that, they may help cover it up though if they have less bleed off than the phasers that were removed. In OPs case he has the new parts but still has a knock at idle, most likely the journals are scored.

What is the likelihood that Ford is going to replace the heads? Cam job is $3500 what is the cost to replace the heads? Ford told me drivetrain warranty doesn’t cover cam phasers but you can see all the work done on this engine so I would assume good faith on their part to fix it once and for all.

At least taking it to their(dealers network) Ford dealership hopefully affords me one of the following…Ford covers the repairs, the dealer covers them under their used car warranty or I just leave it with them and get my money back.

And to anyone reading this is that knock in my video indicative of low/inadequate oil to the cam phasers? And this typical after going through all of the TSBs?
