The difference is in the paperwork. While the under-hood sticker works in Cali with a couple of extra steps, some states that piggyback on Cali emission regulations require the paperwork endorsement too. Those buyers need the Cali compliant version.

that's just weird because even california didn't require the extra endorsement, i'm sure the buying process would have been the same if i bought a car or truck out of state from another dealer. the process was pretty painless minus the 5 hour wait at the dmv.

CA does not need any paperwork. The Truck is 50 state legal, period. CA people buying out of state need a smog check and get the truck weighed no matter what paperwork you do or don't have.

Duh! Reread what I wrote more carefully and it will make a lot more sense to you.

Can we all please just be friends?

Truck is 50 state legal.

Yep they are all 50 State Emissions Certified. Only diff is when being originally delivered to a CA dealer it states "CA Emission Equip - No Charge" on the window sticker. CA DMV only cares about the under hood sticker and they all say they are CA Emissions compliant. CA DMV knows this but still makes us smog and weigh a brand new vehicle...just more stupidity...personally I suspect it's CA dealers spreading this rumor to get you to pay ridiculous ADMs!! :)

Good Luck!

I understood what you said just fine. Not sure that any CARB state would be more strict than CA though - so my thought process is that if it works in CA, it should work in any CARB state.

In some of the east coast states, if it ain't on the paperwork, it ain't getting registered. There is not a provision for "checking the sticker under the hood".

CARB = California Air Resources Board and they set the 50 State standard years ago. As other States adopted the stricter CARB standards over the years auto manufacturers read the writing on the wall and began making all their vehicles CARB compliant...

Thats 100 percent correct. NYS doesnt give a shit about under the hood. If it doesnt have the CA option on the paperwork it can not be registered in NYS untill it is considered a used truck. Funny how California starts this crap and doesnt even follow it.
